Our Story

Gigi & Babbo's house by the sea.

We've been blessed to travel the world with our adult kids and have loved seeing new places and exploring new sights. We've stayed in many great vacation rentals in several countries — and we know how wonderful it is to enjoy a beautiful, well-equipped house. To eat out or cook at home, chill by your own private pool, and enjoy time with family or friends, with the option to retreat to a comfortable en suite bedroom.

In recent years our kids married, and we were promoted to grandparents — Gigi and Babbo — so overseas family travel isn't as feasible. We realized it was time to find a place the kids and grandkids would love returning to. That's how we ended up owning Casa Gibo Del Mar — Gigi and Babbo's "house by the sea."

Unlike most island houses, all five bedrooms are accessible from the hallway in the main living area. Four of the bedrooms have king beds and bedroom 3 has a queen — all with private baths. The lower-level apartment has its own exterior entrance — great for the kids to nap or the adults to keep talking late.

St. Croix has many amazing restaurants, but you may also want to grill your catch on the pool deck or cook in our well-equipped kitchen. We've also wired the master with a desk, monitor, and the fastest internet on the island (Starlink) — in case you're stealing an extra week of paradise.

We hope you and your family fall in love with St. Croix and Casa Gibo Del Mar just like our family has.

Shoys Beach

A beach you'll often have to yourself.

Casa Gibo sits in the gated Shoys neighborhood, which includes Shoys Beach — one of the highest-rated snorkeling and sunning beaches on St. Croix.

The beach is an easy walk or a very short drive from the house. From the parking area, it's about 50 yards through a mangrove tunnel to reach the sand and water — and the odds are good you'll have it to yourself.

The center of the bay is mostly sea grass — but even there we've seen spotted eagle rays and stingrays gliding through. Swim to the right (east) side, just inside or outside the wave line, and among the sea fans, elkhorn, and brain coral we've seen turtles, nurse sharks, octopus, lobster, pufferfish, and thousands of reef fish.

What we've stocked for you

  • 6 beach chairs
  • 2 beach umbrellas
  • Cooler
  • Assorted water toys
  • Collapsible wagon for your gear
  • Snorkel masks & fins

Why St. Croix

Things to do (in no particular order).

We chose to buy here largely because there's more to do on St. Croix than on any other Caribbean island we've visited.

01

Scuba Diving

The Frederiksted Pier night dive is among the best in the world — and the day dive is just as remarkable. Turtles, octopus, seahorses, frogfish, and thousands of reef fish in 25 feet of water. Even a Discover Scuba dive here will be a lifetime memory. Beyond the pier, 50+ sites including the 13,000-foot Cane Bay wall, shipwrecks, and frequent encounters with dolphins, manta rays, and sharks.

Dive shops we love: Blue Salt Divers (small shop in Christiansted), SCUBA (largest, both Christiansted & Frederiksted), Cane Bay Divers (excellent for pier dives), Nep2une Dive Shop (the F'sted pier), Sweet Bottom (Cane Bay wall shore dives).

02

Snorkeling

Our own Shoys Beach is among the best on the island. Tamarind Reef, The Buccaneer, Dorsch Beach, Rainbow Beach (West End), and the Frederiksted Pier are all superb. For something more adventurous, the hike to Jack and Isaac's Beach near Point Udall is a moderate trek rewarded with secluded snorkeling.

03

Golf · 45 Holes

Not Bandon Dunes — but St. Croix's 45 holes are a lot warmer, and a nice diversion from days spent looking like (or acting like) a fish.

Tee times →
04

Kayaking · Bio Bay

Including night tours on the bioluminescent Salt River. The bio bay far exceeded our expectations — about 3 miles of paddling with Sea Thru Kayaks, but well worth the effort.

05

Boating & Sunset Cruises

Sailing or motor. A sunset cruise is a must — we've chartered with Caribbean Sea Adventures several times and always had a marvelous time. Day trips to Buck Island are also magnificent.

Charter →
06

Fishing

Deep-sea, inshore, or spear. We recently landed an ~80-pound yellowfin tuna along with several smaller fish. "Deep-sea" here just means a few hundred yards off the northwest corner of the island — and there's almost always something biting.

Sport fishing →
07

Gecko Tours · UTV

A ton of fun — a UTV tour up into the near-rainforest mountains above Frederiksted. A different perspective on the island and a guaranteed good time.

08

Ziplining

Carambola Zipline tours are a wonderful way to see St. Croix from a whole new vantage point — high above the rainforest on the north side.

09

Horseback Riding

The bucket-list ride through the surf. Yes, really.

10

Surfing

St. Croix isn't famous for surf — but there's a school (St. Croix Surf and SUP), and teenage family members loved it. Seasoned surfers may find the waves tame; for a first surfing experience, it's a blast.

11

Parasailing & Hiking

Parasail with Caribbean Sea Adventures for a higher view. Or hike in the mountains — or down to secluded snorkel beaches like Jack and Isaac's.

12

Or just… the beach.

Dozens of quiet, accessible spots where you can park within 100 feet of the water and have a beach all to yourself. Shoys Beach and Tamarind Reef are both walkable from Casa Gibo.

Where to Eat

A few of our favorites.

St. Croix has many amazing restaurants — though you may also want to grill your catch on the pool deck or cook in Casa Gibo's well-equipped kitchen. Our property manager, Dave Hall of Genesis Properties, can even arrange a private chef if you'd like to be pampered.

AMA at Cane Bay Top of our list

Dining mere yards from the waves — you'll likely get a little splashed. May be one of the most memorable meals of your life. The menu is limited but everything is magnificent. Reservations highly recommended.

Visit AMA →
Savant 9 min away

On the edge of Christiansted. Some of the best cuisine on the island. In winter, the grotto is a romantic spot to eat; we tend to head inside during the warmer months.

The New Deep End From our pool

Visible from our pool deck, at Tamarind Reef Resort. Casual, with live music every night, great fare, and a fine spot for breakfast.

Visit Deep End →
The Landing Beach Bar Cane Bay

One of our favorites. Great views, excellent burgers and fish and chips, and don't miss their locally made ice cream.

Visit Landing →
Virgin Island Roasters Morning ritual

On the main level of the King Christian Hotel, about 8 minutes away. Great coffee, specialty drinks, and good pastries — a regular morning ritual for us.

Too Chez Fine dining

In Christiansted. Amazing fine dining; not on the water, but the food more than makes up for it.

Visit Too Chez →
Hamilton's Christiansted

Classic fine dining in Christiansted. Nice beef, seafood, and salads. No view but a nice modern dining room.

Galangal SE Asian · French

In Christiansted — fine dining (no view) serving Southeast Asian and French cuisine. Foodies won't be disappointed.

Christiansted Boardwalk Multiple spots

The Mill Boardwalk Bar makes amazing pizza we never miss; Brew STX, Shupe's, and Rum Runners are solid for bar food; Harbor Prime is a newer steakhouse with spectacular views.

The Fred & Sand Castles West End sunsets

The beach bars in Frederiksted offer good food and marvelous settings. The West End sunsets are magnificent — we always make time for at least one sunset dinner out here.

Visit The Fred →
Duggan's Reef Lobster

Another St. Croix institution in a beautiful beachside setting. Reservations highly recommended — their lobster is outstanding.

Visit Duggan's →
The GOAT Winter only

Out toward the East End in the Coakley Bay condo complex. Only open in winter (they head to the Rockies in summer), but the food is excellent and the sunsets from their elevated terrace are lovely.

Blue's Barbecue Local classic

A great classic greasy barbecue place on the west side of Christiansted, 12–20 minutes from Casa Gibo. Not open every day — check first — but their barbecue is excellent.

La Reine Chicken Shack Cruzan soul food

A local favorite. Earthy but good. Think Cruzan soul food — lots of rice, beans, and chicken.
